TesRev without Premium Connectivity
No Premium Connectivity? Your Tesla can still play an engine sound with TesRev: share your phone's connection over Wi-Fi. How to do it on iPhone and Android.
Why the Tesla needs internet
TesRev is a web page: the Tesla's browser loads it, then synthesizes the engine sound in the car. With Standard Connectivity, the Tesla's browser only works over Wi-Fi. The simple answer while driving is your phone's hotspot: the Tesla connects to the phone like to any Wi-Fi network.
No audio is streamed: the page loads once (a few hundred kilobytes) and the sound is made by the car itself. With a phone paired, the motion readings it sends add a small, steady data flow.
1. Turn on your phone's hotspot
- iPhone: Settings, Personal Hotspot, turn on Allow Others to Join. If the Tesla does not see it, also turn on Maximize Compatibility.
- Android: Settings, Network (or Connections), Hotspot and tethering, Wi-Fi hotspot. The exact names vary by brand.
2. Connect the Tesla to it
On the Tesla screen, open the Wi-Fi settings, pick your phone's network and type its password. The Tesla remembers it and reconnects by itself next time the hotspot is on.
3. Open tesrev.com
Open the Tesla's browser and go to tesrev.com: the engine screen opens. Then pair the same phone as usual, by scanning the square code: it can share its connection and measure the accelerations at the same time. The full setup is in How to set up TesRev.
With Premium Connectivity
No hotspot needed: the Tesla uses its own mobile connection and the phone its own. TesRev links them through a relay server.
Hear it in your Tesla
Open tesrev.com in your Tesla's web browser: the engine screen opens and the engine starts by itself. Add your phone in a holder for a sharper response. Free while in testing, nothing to install, nothing connected to the car.
